    Answered by the admin

Selective herbicides like MCPA should only be applied to turf that has germinated from seed only after the turf has been established. Only after it has been mowed at least twice is a good indication of how long this is. This is important because (1) Young turfgrass is vulnerable: Newly germinated turfgrass is delicate and more susceptible to herbicide damage. (2) Establishment is key: Allowing the turf to establish a strong root system and mature somewhat before applying herbicides ensures better tolerance and reduces the risk of damage. (3) Mowing encourages growth: Mowing a couple of times helps the turf thicken and become more resilient.

While MCPA 750 Selective Herbicide is designed to kill broadleaf weeds without harming grasses, gum trees are sensitive to many selective broadleaf herbicides, including MCPA. Due to the potential risks, using MCPA 750 around the base of mature gum trees is generally not recommended. Potential Risks: (1) Root Uptake: Even if you're careful with application, gum trees have extensive root systems that can absorb herbicides from the soil. MCPA is absorbed by roots, potentially leading to damage or even death of the tree. (2) Drift: Spray drift can occur, especially on windy days, and contact with the tree's foliage can cause harm. (3) Soil Type: Sandy soils can increase the risk of herbicide leaching to the roots.

MCPA 750 Selective Herbicide is used to target broadleaf weeds. As Crowsfoot Grass is not a broadleaf species, the addition of MCPA to a tank mix will have little or no effect on making the spray more effective. We would suggest including Glufosinate Herbicide with the Glyphosate (5mL per 1L) to make a more effective mix. A good wetting agent will also guarantee the best kill.

MCPA 750 has a withholding period (WHP) for cereals & pastures that states 'do not graze or cut for stock food for seven days after application'. Note that the WHP applies to animals destined for slaughter. This ensures that the product's residues fall to or below the maximum limit that the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) permits.

Sir Walter Buffalo grass is likely susceptible to MCPA 750 Selective Herbicide as it is a broadleaf plant species. However, the product label does not indicate if the Agapanthus may also be vulnerable. An off-label trial would need to be undertaken at your own risk to test the suitability of MCPA for this use.

MCPA is generally considered safe when used according to label instructions. However, it is important to take precautions when using any herbicide around wildlife, livestock and pets. It is advisable to avoid applying the herbicide when livestock or pets are in the vicinity, especially during grazing periods or when they have direct access to treated areas. Only allow re-entry to the area after the spray has dried if possible.

MCPA 750 Selective Herbicide is a selective herbicide for the control of broadleaf weeds, not grasses.  It will not have any effect on summer grass but will target Sir Walter as it is a broadleaf species.  We do not recommend using MCPA 750 Selective Herbicide for this purpose.  We suggest you consider either a post-emergent spray such as Metric Herbicide or a pre-emergent treatment such as Barricade Herbicide, Spratan Herbicide, Oxafert Herbicide, Ronstar Herbicide, Freehand Herbicide or OnSet 10GR Herbicide.

Spraying Glyphosate (Roundup) & MCPA either in a tank mix together or immediately after each other is fine.  MCPA 750  is a selective herbicide for controlling many broadleaf weeds in established pastures, grass playing fields and lawns, and in cereals, grass seed and linseed crops, but it is only registered to control spiny emex in cropping situations.  Dicamba M Selective herbicide is registered to control spiny emex in domestic situations as a spot spray for seedlings only, rate 12.5 mL/ 10 L water (APVMA permit PER11463.)

Although clover is not listed as a plant that MCPA 750 Selective Herbicide is registered to control, it is likely to damage or kill clover in certain situations or when used at specific rates.  Careful attention must be paid to the directions of use label and the critical comments for each application to see if clover is at risk when MCPA is applied.

Other selective herbicides for the control of woody weeds which you may want to consider that are registered for lantana are as follows: Hatchet Herbicide, Lantana 600 Herbicide, Grazon Extra, and Garlon 600 Herbicide.  Always read 'directions for use' carefully before use.

Soil microorganisms rapidly degrade MCPA and its formulations. It has low persistence, with a reported field half-life of 14 days to 1 month, depending on soil moisture and soil organic matter. The more organic matter, the more slowly things tend to move. Compost is high in organic matter, while sand is not. Different soil types have different water-penetration rates. The pesticide’s ability to dissolve in water is also crucial.

  31. Q What is the ESI of MCPA
Asked by Sandra on October 3, 2021 4:15 pm
    Answered by the admin

MPCA 750 does not have any Export Slaughter Interval (ESI) or Trade Advice listed on the products label or with the APVMA.

MCPA 750 has a withholding period (WHP) for cereals & pastures not graze or cut for stock food for 7 days after application.  A Harvest withholding period is not required when used as directed.

Our interpretation is that there is not an ESI applicable when used as directed, however, if you are exporting products or produce that may be affected by this you should always check with the APVMA (Gov't Pesticide Regulator) as this information may have changed.  The APVMA can be contacted on Phone: 02 6770 2300 or [email protected]

Restraints:

  • Do not apply if crop or weeds are stressed due to dry or excessively moist conditions.
  • Do not apply if rain is likely within 6 hours.

General Instructions:

  • Weeds should be sprayed while actively growing and at their most susceptible stage.
  • As a general guide, annuals should be sprayed when young and perennials just prior to appearance of bud stage.
  • Extremes of cold or drought are unfavourable.
  • The best conditions are when the soil is moist, weather fine and rain unlikely within 6 hours of application.
  • Do not spray crops or weeds outside the stages indicated in “critical comments” as damage, loss of yield or inadequate weed control may result.
  • Do not spray in high winds.
  • The tolerance of pasture legumes to applied product can vary with species, variety, growing conditions, stage of growth and companion crop cover.
  • Do not spray cereal crops undersown with lucerne as damage may result.
